Fabric Needle
Thread
Sewing Machine
Polyester filling
Glue
Paint
Glitter
Transfer tape and paper
Heat and bond tape
Lace
Directions:
You will need to choose a heavy fabric for making throw pillows. You can usually find this material at a crafts store or fabric store.
Next, I suggest that you try to find a lighter weight fabric with an intricate design or pattern that you would like to use. I do not recommend spending a lot of money on the lightweight material as you will be cutting the designs out to apply to heavier fabric for making pillow.
Be sure to pick up some lace that will bring out the color of both the heavy fabric and the design of the lightweight fabric you will be using.
While at the craft store, you should be able to find some transfer tape and paper. This is paper that you will use to attach to the back of the lightweight fabric for cutting out your design and applying with a hot iron to the heavier fabric that you will be using to make pillows.
Once you have all of your supplies, you will need to find a workspace.
The first thing that you will need to do is lay out your lightweight fabric and examine it. You are looking for whole designs or small individual designs that you can cut out. Once you have picked out the areas that are appropriate, apply transfer paper to the back of the fabric and follow directions on transfer paper for attaching with hot iron.
Once you have attached the transfer paper, then take your scissors and cut design out. Be sure to cut out all areas and trim any edges that are not part of the design.
Now, lay out your heavier fabric, and cut into equal proportions. (Optional: Some people prefer to use a pattern for cutting out their throw pillows.) Now place fabric front side down, with the wrong side showing upwards. Using sewing machine, stitch around the edges of the fabric, attaching together.
If you do not have a sewing machine, you can use heat bonding tape.
Peel backing from one side of tape and attach the wrong side edge of fabric. Place tape around all four edges.
Next, peel remaining back off of tape, and place other piece of frabric, wrong side down, on top of tape and fabric bottom.
Now take a hot iron press firmly along edges of fabric to seel together.
When using heat and bond tape, try to get fabric cut as evenly as possible. When laying fabric over tape, try to positions as accurately as possible. Once sealed with iron, it cannot be repositioned. If there are some strings hanging from the edges, trim if necessary. However, this area will be covered with lace, so a few imperfections are allowed.
Once edges have been adhered, take your cut out designs and arrange over fabric until you get an arrangement that you are happy with.
Once you know how to place your designs, peel backing off of transfer paper and place design in appropriate place. Then take a hot iron and run over design until it has adhered to fabric.
Do this with all of your designs. Do not forget to decorate the back side of the pillow also. Allow designs to cool for one to two hours.
After designs have cooled, take polyester filling and stuff pill as full as you can.
Once stuffed, if you have a sewing machine, sewing remaining edge together.
Or if you prefer, take a strip of heat and bond tape, attach to inside of fabric edge and using hot iron, press firmly along edge of fabric until adhered.
Now that you have made your pillow, we just need to put on some finishing touches.
Apply heat and bond tape along the edges of pillow. Attach lace to tape and apply hot iron to adhere if so desired.
Take clear glitter glue paint and brush over designs to give them an irredescent effect.
Use glue to apply colored stones or other decorations.
It’s your pillow, decorate as you desire.
